About Family

The Lourens family recently received a Song Thrush bird, name after a grand mother: Mavis Colette. Mavis is a feminine name, derived from a name from the common Old World song thrush. The bird also given name is Turdus philomelos, the bird visits Cyprus in the winter. It has a chestnut back and many black spots on the breast and belly. It is very hard to see as it is shy and usually hidden among the branches and foliage. It has a sweet, loud song with many repeated phrases. It likes feeding on snails by breaking their shell on rocks.

Michael and Colette are the youngest in the Lourens family and are dizygotic twins ('non-identical' or 'fraternal'), meaning that each twin develops from a separate egg and each egg is fertilized by its own sperm cell.
